Female Judges in Star Trek

Hmm... has anyone ever noticed - practically all the judges in Star Trek are women?

There's Philippa Louvois in The Measure of a Man, Norah Satie in The Drumhead, Els Renora in Dax, Makbar in Tribunal, T'Lara in Rules of Engagement... can anyone think of any more? Or any male examples to balance them out?

Even in the Original Series there was a female prosecutor, Areel Shaw, although in that case the judge was male.

I dunno, I quite like the idea that in the future, law becomes, for whatever reason, a female-dominated profession.

CCotM for June 2010

Congratulations to our new Cosmic Cheerleader of the Month, Caprica 6 of Battlestar Galactica (played by Tricia Helfer)!

Caprica 6 is a version of the 6th Cylon humanoid model who was assigned to seduce Gaius Baltar to obtain information about the Colonial defense system to allow the Cylons to destroy the 12 human Colonies. But while seducing him, she found she had developed feelings for him, shielding him from the nuclear blast that destroyed the city on Caprica.

Caprica 6's compassion for Baltar and the surviving humans lead her to question the Cylons' agenda and encourage peace with the humans. However, it alienated her from the other leading Cylons and left her torn between her own people and the humans, particularly her love for Baltar, whose cowardice failed to live up to her dreams of him. Though becoming disillusioned with both races, she continued to hope for a peaceful solution someday, believing that was the will of the one God. She's a character who shows mercy when she can (even if it manifests itself in dark ways, like killing an infant, perhaps to spare it suffering the Cylon attack on Caprica) and one who just wants peace for both Cylons and humans, though nothing but trouble seems to come of their efforts. An idealist, she must face the fact that the world Baltar, and she herself are flawed and cannot be what she wishes they were, and so must try to find her place in the war and some kind of peace.

Going Postal Adaptation

Anyone else see this on Sky1 the other night?

I really enjoyed it! Obviously there can almost never be a perfect adaptation of any book, especially a Discworld one, but I think this one got a lot of things right.

The one thing I kept thinking was needs more Sacharissa! I know she's barely in the book, so it's not the adaptation's fault, but (and perhaps this is because I already love Tamsin Greig anyway) everything got a bit more exciting when she was onscreen. Funny, she's not really how I pictured her, but awesome anyway. I'd love for them to adapt The Truth next so she can be in it more.

Basically now I just really want to reread all the Ankh-Morpork books, which is a problem as I'm already trying to read the Deep Space Nine relaunch, the Temeraire books (highly recommended, btw) and, shockingly, even some stuff that isn't SF&F...

Hey guys!

MODS MESSAGE ME AND DELETE THIS IF ITS A NO GO...I'M NEW TO LJ

anyway, I'm a new member, and I was wondering-

Have you guys had any discussion on Scully? I didn't see her name in the tags, and I just think she's kind of essential to have in a community about female sci-fi discussion.

Rani Chandra Drabble Tag

Welcome to Rani Chandra Drabble Tag! Everyone is welcome and taking part is easy, here are the ways to do it:

1) Post a drabble prompt in the comments to this post – prompts can be, a single word, a sentence, a place, an idea, a pairing, whatever you like
2) Post a Rani Chandra drabble (a piece of writing 100 words –or thereabouts, we’re not picky – in length) in reply to one of the prompts
3) Remember to keep it PG-13 or under, this is a family community, y’all!

You can post as many prompts/drabbles as you like, if you post a prompt you’re not obliged to also post a drabble (and vice versa), and you’re very welcome to write for prompts that have already been written. Have fun!
First of all, I have to get something up-to-the-minute off my chest. It's not really spoilery as such, but it does relate to a forthcoming episode,so it gets its own separate cut:

Its own separate cut...Collapse )

Now then...

WHO-NESS. CONTAINS SOME MASSIVE CURRENT SEASON SPOILAGE.Collapse ).

Uhura Fic Rec

A drive-by rec, because I'm at work, but I think you should all read this!

Title: Lunch and Other Obscenities
Author: rheanna27
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 9,786
Author’s Summary: Nyota liked her roommate just fine until she met her. (Star Trek XI)

I know everyone and their dog has written reboot fic at the moment, and there are any number of Uhura and Gaila fics out there to choose from, but I'd say, if you're going to read just one, make it this one. It's just absolutely georgeous. It's from Uhura's POV, and she and Gaila are both wonderfully full and developed characters in it, and it's all about friendship and cultural differences and what it's like being a stranger in a new place, and it deals with it all fabulously.
To top it off, it comes with a beautiful illustration by irrel.
