Nyota Uhura Drabble Tag

Welcome to Nyota Uhura Drabble Tag! Everyone is welcome and taking part is easy, here are the ways to do it:

1) Post a drabble prompt in the comments to this post – prompts can be, a single word, a sentence, a place, an idea, a pairing, whatever you like
2) Post a Nyota Uhura drabble (a piece of writing 100 words –or thereabouts, we’re not picky – in length) in reply to one of the prompts
3) Remember to keep it PG-13 or under, this is a family community, y’all!

You can post as many prompts/drabbles as you like, if you post a prompt you’re not obliged to also post a drabble (and vice versa), and you’re very welcome to write for prompts that have already been written. Have fun!

Rani Vid - New Girl in Town

I thought to get the ball rolling I'd post this Rani vid I made a while back:

The joint Cosmic Cheerleaders of the Month(s) for April/May 2010 are Rani Chandra, from The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Nyota Uhura, from Star Trek: The Original Series and the recent Star Trek movie.

Rani Chandra expects it to be challenging when she moves to a new town, and a new school where her dad is the headmaster, but she doesn't expect a deadly extraterrestrial clown to mess up her first day. Nevertheless, she takes the revelation that there are aliens visiting Earth all the time in her stride, and happily joins her wacky neighbours in apprehending the bad ones and giving the good ones a helping hand.

While she's not saving the world, Rani still finds time to pursue a future career in journalism and study for her GCSEs, as well as keeping an eye on Luke and Clyde and making sure her parents don't figure out what's going on in the attic of Number 13.

As communications officer on the Enterprise, Nyota Uhura has her work cut out for her making sure that they can talk to everyone they meet, and that everyone on the ship can stay in contact during an emergency. It's a task she's more than equal to - she speaks 83% of official Federation languages, and more besides, and in a pinch she can rewire the entire communications system of a starship. She's also good at talking down crazy computers, loves to sing, and is one of the few people who can get away with teasing Spock.

Plus, we know from the new movie that, even fresh out of the academy, she still has what it takes to come up with the goods under pressure.

We'll be discussing Rani and Uhura up until June, so feel free to add your thoughts, or post your stories, icons, vids, ideas etc - either in the comments section of this post or in a separate post to the community.

Clarification on Poll Voting

Morning all!

Just to make sure everything's clear, here are the revised rules on voting in the monthly polls:

1. Please only vote for two people – we know it’s hard to choose when everyone’s awesome, but somebody has to win! If you vote for more than two people, none of your votes will be counted. If you vote for more than two people by mistake, let us know which two you’d like us to count. If there’s only one person in the poll that you know or like, feel free to only use one of your votes.

2. You must be a member to vote - If you would like to vote and you’re not yet a member, feel free to join the community and then vote. If you do that, we’d love for you to introduce yourself and get involved in discussion, too – even if the person you voted for doesn’t win, anything about women in SF&F is fair game to talk about, Cosmic Cheerleader of the Month or not!

The current poll will end around this time tomorrow, if anyone wants to vote and hasn't yet.
Welcome to the latest poll!

Due to a combination of confusion, foreign travel and dragon attack, this poll will cover both April and May, and the top two contenders will be the CCotMs for those months.

Due to the last poll getting so skewed, voting is now members only and you can vote for two people. Votes from non-members will not be counted.

Poll #1562882 CCotM for April and May
This poll is closed.

Who should be Cosmic Cheerleader of the Month for April/May?

Thursday Next (the Thursday Next books)
Inara Serra (Firefly)
Nyota Uhura (ST: TOS and ST: IX)
Rani Chandra (The Sarah Jane Adventures)
Sookie Stackhouse (The Southern Vampire Mysteries/True Blood)

Helen Magnus Stories

Sanctuary is such an interesting show and Helen Magnus has such a long and varied past that there's plenty of material to mine when it comes to writing fanfiction, like this interesting little character study:

Five Truths Helen Magnus Almost Told - by greenbirds

There's opportunity to explore Helen's recent, and less recent past:

His Mother's Pupil - by doylefan22

Meeting of Minds - by brunhilde_1013

Not to mention her frequent meetings with historical personages (this ones's for adults only):

The Aviatrix - by Geonn

Plus, here's a list of reasons why Sanctuary is worth watching:

Feel free to add your own Helen recs, either in the comments to this entry or in a separate post!

New Star Trek Women

Hi there!  I recently realized that a few years ago a Star Trek: the Next Generation relaunch novel series was begun.  I've now read a few of these novels, and I really like them.  One of the things I like most is the plethora of new, interesting female characters on the Enterprise: Jasminder Choudhury, Dina Elfiki, T'Ryssa Chen, Miranda Kadohata, Joanna Faur, etc.  Also, I've enjoyed the cross-over novel series Star Trek: Destiny, which involves these new Enterprise characters as well as characters from Riker's new command, the Titan, and Ezri Dax's new command, the Aventine.  These two ships also have lots of cool female characters, including Ezri Dax (duh), good old Deanna Troi, Melora Pazlar (remember her from DS9?), Christine Vale, Lonnoc Kedair, Mikaela Leishman, and Olianna Mirren.  Lots of other strong female characters also play roles in the Destiny series, including Seven of Nine, UFOP president Nanietta Bacco, and Captain Erika Hernandez of Star Trek: Enterprise (yeah, it gets all "wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey").  As you can probably tell, I'm all excited about these new books and characters...they're like my Star Trek dream come true.  If anyone else has been reading these books and would like to chat with me about them, I'm all ears!  :)

March CCotM Poll Results

Yeah, so it's April and I completely dropped the ball and didn't get results posted online or lead discussion on our winner. I'm not sure if we, thus, want to make our winner CC for April and skip March, but we'll at least get the ball rolling either way.

On another note, you may have noticed our CC won by more votes than there our members of our community. This was due to an attempt to reach out to fangroups of the characters to try to get new members to join, but  word only wound up getting out to one. We're now going back and revising our rules on voting regulations, more on which will be posted later. But, for the sake of this poll, we've decided to let this win stand, as the other girls will get their chance again and it's a good character regardless.

So, with that out of the way,

Congratulations to our CCotM for March (or April), HELEN MAGNUS of Sanctuary!

(Note: I tried to add a picture, but everything I found is copyrighted so it won't show up here. If you know of a good one, I'll add it.)

Helen (played by Amanda Tapping) was born in England in the Victorian era and worked as a doctor and a scientist when it was unusual for women to do that sort of thing, partly thanks to her scientist father, who she followed into his work with ‘Abnormals’, ie supernatural beings like werewolves, vampires etc. She is has a sort of eternal youth, thanks to a discovery made with a group of scientists and paranormal researchers, though she can still be killed. This means she will outlive everyone she knows, but she tries not to dwell on that fact.

Helen runs a sanctuary for Abnormals who are unable to fit in with human society. Some of them are there voluntarily and some of them are basically animals that she looks after for their safety and the safety of others. She spends her time running the sanctuary from day-to-day, rescuing/capturing Abnormals that need help or are causing trouble, investigating weird goings on and generally having freaky adventures with her daughter Ashley, who doesn’t look much younger than she does, and her protégé Will Zimmerman. She treats her Abnormal charges with compassion, always trying to communicate with them and help them rather than just taking them out and works hard to make sure that everyone who lives at the Sanctuary is happy and comfortable, even the ones who are harmful or malevolent.

Have fun discussing her and the show! Apparently only season 1 has aired in the UK, so I guess post spoiler warnings accordingly.

March CCotM Poll

I apologize for this being unreasonably late. The chaos of research has died down at last, to be replaced by the chaos of new puppy in the house. But I hope you'll be pleased with the selections for this poll (a number of which are classified under "Seriously? They weren't a CC already?"). And I suspect we'll end up carrying this CC over into the new month as we kind of have with Donna, unless we just want to crack down and get back on schedule.
